Now we are really talking! This is the age when there is nothing to stop children getting on their bikes, learning to ride and really finding their independence! Although some 2 year olds might be reluctant to start using balance bikes, and many 6 year olds will have grown out of balance bikes, most 3 year olds should be raring to go!

This means that there is a huge range of models available for children aged around 3, so it would be impossible to fit them all into this review. We have selected our favourite 5 models and listed them in the table below, so you can see the sort of bikes that are available when you are looking for the best balance bike for 3 year olds.

How to find the Best Balance Bike for a 3 year old

Find the most suitable saddle height

By the time your child is approaching their 3rd birthday, they will probably be too big for one of the smaller balance bikes we featured in our reviews for the best balance bikes for 2 year olds.

This means they will need a bike with a larger seat height, and this is probably the most important factor to consider when buying a balance bike!

You need to make sure that the lowest setting of the saddle is around 2.5 – 3cm lower than the inside leg of the child. The average inside leg measurement for a 3 year old is between 35 – 38cm, so this means that you should be looking for bikes with saddle heights starting from between 32 – 35cm.

This means that the child will be able to get on and off the bike comfortably, and as long as the seat is adjustable (which it will be on most models), then a good quality bike bought at this age should see them right through to their first pedal bike.

We have more details on seat height in our Balance Bike Seat Height Guide.

Frame type

The majority of the best balance bikes for 3 year olds have traditionally been made from either a metal or wooden frame.

The advantage of metal frames is that this means the bike is usually more lightweight than wooden frames and metal bikes generally have more of an appearance of a 'real bike'.

Another big advantage of metal frames is that range of saddle heights is much greater than on wooden frames, and this is important at the age of 3 when children are growing so quickly.

However, this does not mean that you should discount wooden balance bikes for a 3 year olds as these bikes are also very popular.

Wooden balance bikes can be painted in a number of funky designs, and a good example is the range of Kiddimoto balance bikes. These bikes usually have a birch wooden frame so they are better for the environment.

Another option becoming more widely available is aluminium frames. A balance bike with an aluminium frame will be even lighter than a metal bike, and one of the lightest bikes currently available is the LAVA Sport balance bike which has an aluminium frame and fork.

There are plenty of other things to consider though when choosing a balance bike for a 3 year old, including style, tyres, brakes and plenty more! We have examined a few of our favourites below.

Recommended Balance Bikes for 3 year olds

Strider Sport Balance Bike

  • Lightweight and sporty balance bike
  • Saddle height from 28cm all the way to 48cm
  • Footrests great for gliding
  • Puncture proof EVA polymer tyres

We have included the Strider Sport balance bike in our recommendations for 2 year olds, but we also think it is perfect for 3 year olds as well!

Strider are renowned for producing quality balance bikes, and the Strider Sport model has plenty of features that make it an excellent  choice.

Firstly, it has a stylish and sporty design, and it is very lightweight at just 2.9kg which makes it one of the lightest balance bikes on the market.

It also has a very low starter saddle height at just 28cm, which makes it suitable for very young children and this can be extended all the way to 48cm with the help of a seatpost extension. However it is likely your child will have mastered balance before they need this if they start riding at age 2 or 3..

The Strider Sport also has a footrest which is handy when the child is gliding, and although it is more expensive than some of the other balance bikes available it is a great choice as a first bike for your child.

Banana Balance Bike GT

  • Saddle height 32cm - 40cm
  • Signature curved frame
  • 12" inflatable tyres
  • Super light aluminium handlebars

The Banana Balance Bike GT is one of our very favourite balance bikes for 3 year olds for a number of reasons.

The signature curved frame gives it a fun and stylish design, and this also has the added benefit of making the bike easy to access for the child.

The bike is lightweight and strong, and it is the perfect size for a 3 year old to grow with a saddle height between 32cm and 44cm,.

The GT version includes 12" alloy wheels as well as air tyres for a smooth ride. In addition, the threadless headset provides a steering and handlebar set up that is often only found on adult bikes.

Chillafish BMXie Balance Bike

  • BMX design
  • Inflatable tyres for grip
  • Saddle height from 32cm

One of our favourite models for 3 years old's is the Chillafish BMXie balance bike which is featured in the table above.

The Chillafish BMXie balance bike has a cool and stylish BMX design, with a frame made from high quality fibre glass material and inflatable tyres for excellent grip. This bike looks and performs like a real BMX!

The seat height ranges from 32cm – 39cm so this is perfect for 3 year olds, and the robust design means that this bike should be able to stand the test of whatever most energetic 3 and 4 year olds can throw at it!

Puky 4014 Learner Bike

  • Step through frame
  • Special learner bike saddle
  • Stand included

Another great option is the Puky 4014 Learner bike.

Puky provide models for children of all ages, but we find that the Puky 4014 Learner bike is perfect for this age group.

The lowest seat height of this bike is 34cm, and it is also different from some other models with the low platform which makes it easier for smaller children to get on and off the bike.

Wooden Balance Bikes for 3 year olds

If you would prefer a wooden balance bike for your 3 year old, then there are several options in this category.

One of the advantages of wooden balance bikes is that they can be painted in all colours so they are available in a lot of fun and exciting designs. Although the saddle does not usually have as many available heights, the range on most bikes should cater for 3 year old needs.

Kiddimoto Kurve Balance Bike

  • Birch wooden frame
  • A range of funky designs
  • Saddle height 37cm - 39cm

The Kiddimoto Kurve series of bikes is perfect for 3 year olds, and you can choose between designs such as Pastel Dotty, Union Jack, Police and Fire among many more.

They have a very different look to metal balance bikes – and you may have even seen them on Dragon’s Den!

The Kiddimoto Kurve has a higher saddle height that some other balance bikes, with height starting at 37cm and can be adjusted to 39cm. This means it is better for slightly taller children but should be suitable for most 3 year olds.

Other excellent wooden balance bikes for 3 year olds are the Prince Lionheart balance bike and the Jiggy Wooden Balance Bike

The Boppi Wooden Balance Bike is another great option and is usually slighty cheaper.

Top of the range balance bikes for 3 year olds

Specialized Hotwalk 2020 Balance BIke

  • Step through frame
  • Rubber skin, puncture proof tyres
  • Padded saddle and high quality build

Finally, if you can stretch your budget to over £100 or more then we would recommend the Specialized Hotwalk Balance Bike.

This is a stylish and high quality bike that caters perfectly for 3 year olds, and it has been redesigned for 2020 with a step through frame and rubber skin, puncture proof tyres.

This new generation of balance bike tyres provides fantastic traction without the concern of a puncture. This bike is also easy to handle and is equipped with a range of top quality features such as a padded seat and stem with threadless headset.

The saddle height is from 34cm - 43cm, so this is a fantastic way for your child to learn the fundamentals of balance and steering.

Summary

It is very important to choose the best balance bike for your 3 year old, as if you select the wrong model at this age then it can easily set your child back a good couple of years when it comes to riding a pedal bike.

However, with such a wide range of quality models available, there should be something for all 3 year olds who are looking to get on their bike and explore the world.

We have featured many more on this website, so happy riding!

Balance bike weight

While you are searching through all of the options and looking for the best balance bike, one of the major factors to consider when you are choosing the best model is the weight of your balance bike.

An obvious point to note is that smaller balance bikes aimed at 2-3 year olds will generally be lighter than balance bikes for older children or those aged 6 and over.

It is important to make sure that you buy a balance bike that your child finds easy to handle, otherwise they will struggle with the bike and it might well put them off riding it.

A useful guideline is that your bike should be less than a third of your child’s weight in order to achieve this.

The lightest balance bikes for 2 year olds will start at around 3kg, so this will be perfect for smaller children.

Strider 12 Classic Balance Bike

Good examples of these sorts of bikes are the Strider Classic (pictured) and the Boppi Metal Balance Bike, which both weigh exactly 3kg.

Another bike to consider is the Chicco Red Bullet Balance Bike which weighs just 2.7kg, and is one of the smallest bikes on the market.

A lighter bike is also appreciated by parents when the rider decides that they have had enough and they end up carrying the bike!

You can check out our recommended balance bikes for 2 year olds in our comparison table which shows the weights of our suggested models.

Balance bikes for children in the core balance bike market of between 3 and 5 will vary in weight between from around 4.5kg such as the Kiddimoto Kurve and Prince Lionheart up to the Weeride Deluxe, which is one of the larger balance bikes with 14 inch wheels and weight in at 6.5kg.

There is a huge range of balance bikes available in this part of the market, all of which vary in frame composition, style and features.

The weight of your balance bike is one of the factors to consider when you are looking for the best balance bike, and it is important to get it right for the reasons outlined above

Mongoose balance bike

Mongoose boys balance bike

CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE

The Mongoose Balance Bike is currently unavailable. Please see our recommendations for alternative wooden balance bikes for this age group:

Here is our review of the Mongoose balance bike for when it is available again:

The Mongoose balance bike for boys is one of our favourite bikes that we have reviewed.

The first thing that stands out about this bike is the frame, which is produced from natural birch plywood and offers an eye catching design.

The wooden frame means that the bike is environmentally friendly, and the black background is complemented by flames along the side and on the front of the bike, and with red handlebars, 12 inch red aluminium wheels and a black saddle so this will really appeal to little riders who want to get on their bike.

Other features of the Mongoose balance bike for boys include an adjustable saddle and pneumatic air tyres which provide a comfortable ride. Most leading balance bikes offer this style of tyre, although others such as Strider prefer the EVA foam tyre.

The maximum weight of the bike is 3.5kg, and this bike will be suitable for children from age 3 and upwards as 2 year olds will struggle with the weight of the bike and the saddle height. If you are buying a bike for a 2 year old then check out our recommended bikes here.

Scooter balance bike

Balance bikes come in all shapes and sizes and cater for children from as young as 18 months up to children as old as 11 or 12. Bikes can be made from wood, steel or aluminium – and although they come in a range of styles most models are in the shape of a traditional bicycle.

We have already looked at a range of motorbike balance bikes if you are looking for a bike in a exciting racing style, and another style of balance bike available is a scooter balance bike.

These bikes have a fun and funky design, they will really help your child to stand out from the crowd and are a great introduction to cycling.

Kiddimoto Scooter Wooden Balance Bike

Kiddimoto Scooter Balance Bike
  • Fun and funky designs
  • Made from birch plywood
  • Stand out from the crowd

There are currently a limited number of scooter balance bikes available and our favourite is the Kiddimoto Scooter Wooden Balance Bike.

Kiddimoto specialise in balance bikes and have range of other bikes such as the iconic Kiddimoto Kurve, one of our recommended balance bikes for 3 year olds.

All of the Kiddimoto Balance bikes are made from natural birch plywood, and we love the Kiddimoto Scooter Balance Bike!

This bike is based on the style of the iconic Mod Scooters of the 1960’s, so the rider will really look the part as the design takes influence from the original 60’s Lambretta Scooter.

The Kiddimoto Scooter Balance bike is available in a range of colours including orange, red and Union Jack – or you could really go for it with the Mod Target Design!

Other features include a footboard for free wheeling and pneumatic air tyres.

Although the seat on this bike is not adjustable, it is a great scooter balance bike and will provide hours of fun.

We will keep you updated when more scooter balance bikes become available!

The most expensive balance bikes

We try to feature all types of balance bikes on this website, ranging from the most basic and economical bikes through to the most expensive and deluxe bikes which will offer a much wider range of features.

Although you can get an excellent balance bike for as little as £30 - £35, most bikes will retail between £50 - £100. This will buy you a good quality bike with extra features such as padded seats, safety handlebars and a stylish design. There is a huge range of models to choose from in this price bracket including Puky, Weeride and Bike Star.

However, we realise that some people will be only be looking for the very best and most expensive bikes, and so there are a handful of models that we can focus on!

Carbon Fibre Balance Bikes

The most expensive balance bikes available are made from carbon fibre, which makes the bikes extremely light and very strong along with a smooth and comfortable ride.

There are now carbon fibre balance bikes available from several manufacturers, so if you have in excess of £500 to spend on your balance bike then read on!

YSH Carbon Fibre Balance Bike

YSH Carbon Fibre Balance Bike

  • Carbon fibre frame
  • Ergonomic design
  • Shock absorber pnuematic tyres
  • Saddle height 30cm - 40cm

This sleek and stylish balance bike is a top of the range model with a carbon fibre frame, aluminium alloy stem and anti-wear, shock absorber pneumatic tyres to provide a smooth and jolt free ride.

This balance bike is ideal for all ages, as the low saddle height makes the bike accessible for riders as young as 2 years old.

It is extremely important to make sure that the bike you are choosing fits your child, and most 2 year olds should be able to handle this bike. The seat extends up to 40cm, so if they take to riding then this should last them most of the way to a pedal bike.

This bike has high quality features, as along with the carbon fibre frame it also includes a high quality leather seat and rubber pneumatic tyres. The ergonomic design makes the bike easy to ride and the safety grips on the handlebars protect from scrapes.

An amazing balance bike that is a fantastic introduction to cycling!

Balance bikes over £100

If your budget doesn’t quite stretch to a carbon fibre balance bike, but you are happy to spend in excess of £100 then there are excellent bikes available from manufacturers such as Specialized and Early Rider.

The Specialized Hotwalk balance bike has a lightweight aluminium frame, a lower seat height for 2019 and a step through frame which makes it ideal for younger children.

If you would prefer a wooden balance bike, then you could consider the Early Rider Lite or the Early Rider Classic, which are both high quality balance bikes around this price point. We have outlined the differences between these bikes in another post.

There is certain to be a balance bike out there to suit you whether your budget is £30 or £500!

Differences between Early Rider Lite and Early Rider Classic

As an Amazon associate I may earn a small fee from qualifying purchases at no extra cost to you. This helps us to run the site. Thank you for your support!

Early rider offer some of the best quality wooden balance bikes around - they are brilliant bikes made from high quality birch wood, offer a range of superb features and look stylish with a sleek design and fiery emblem on the frame.

If you have looked through all of the reviews and decided on an Early Rider balance bike as the most suitable for your child (great choice by the way), then a quandary that you may find yourself in as a parent is whether to buy the Early Rider Lite or to go for the Early Rider classic - so we thought it would be useful to compare the two bikes for you!

Main differences between Early Rider Lite and Early Rider Classic

Although the Early Rider Classic is a superb balance bike, and one of the leading bikes on the market - some children will be on their feet and ready to ride before they are big enough to handle the Classic. This is where the Early Rider Lite really comes into it's own, as it is designed for children as young as 18-20 months with a range of features to suit.

Weight

The first main difference that you will notice is the weight of the bike. The Early Rider Lite weighs in at just 3.25kg, making it one of the lightest wooden balance bikes available and easy to handle for smaller children.

The Classic weighs 4.25kg in comparison, which would make it quite difficult for a smaller 2 year old to get to grips with - but on the other hand the Classic will be able to support older children as they grow and is suitable for riders up to 5 years of age.

Saddle Height

Both bikes offer adjustable seat heights, which means that you can increase the height of the saddle as your child grows. One of the most important aspects to consider when buying a balance bike is the seat height (check out our saddle height guide), and if you buy a bike where the saddle is too high then your child will be disappointed as they won't be able to ride it properly!

The lowest saddle height on the Early Rider Lite is just 29cm, so this will be suitable for younger children and is comparable with models such as the Puky LRM Balance bike. The lowest seat height on the Classic is 31.5cm.

Tyres

The third main difference between the bikes is the tyres. Both bikes come equipped with pneumatic (air) tyres, but the Early Rider Lite offers 12" tyres at the front and rear, while the Classic features a 14" front tyre and a 'Fat Boy' 12" tyre on the rear. These tyres help to support the sturdier frame of the Early Rider Classic, with the Lite offering speed and agility.

We hope this helps to summarise the main differences between Early Rider Lite and Early Rider classic. They are both very high quality balance bikes, and both models come equipped with a range of other features including the stylish wooden frame, an embossed faux leather seat and a dual steering system.

The Early Rider Lite is built for younger children, so if your child is ready for a balance bike by the age of 18 - 20 months then this will be the bike for you. If they master balance, steering and riding by the age of 4 then they should be ready for a pedal bike by this age, but if you think your child will be enjoying their balance to the age of 4 and beyond then the Early Rider Classic will be a better investment. Happy riding!

Scoot Balance Bike

  • Lightweight Alloy Frame
  • 14 inch wheels with air tyres
  • Great bike for 4 - 7 year olds
  • Saddle Height 40cm - 54cm

The Scoot XL balance bike is manufactured by Ridgeback, who have been established for over 30 years and have grown from offering a single mountain bike to a wide range of cycles and accessories.

The Ridgeback Scoot XL balance bike is for slightly older children than most balance bikes, with 14 inch wheels and a saddle height starting at 40cm. Other balance bikes with 14 inch wheels include the Weeride Deluxe and the Frog Tadpole Plus balance bikes.

It sits towards the top end of the balance bike market in terms of price with a wide range of excellent features.

The Scoot XL balance bike looks like a quality bike, with a sturdy, but lightweight alloy frame, a stylish design and air tyres on alloy rims.

As already mentioned, the larger wheels and higher saddle make this bike more suitable for 4 - 7 year olds who have not previously tried a balance bike or who don’t yet have the confidence to progress and use a pedal bike.

This bike comes with air tyres, so this provides a comfortable ride as the tyres will provide plenty of ‘give’ when riding over rough surfaces or up and down kerbs etc.

Riders of the Scoot XL balance bike also love the wide handlebars, which allow a more natural riding position and also contributes to comfort.

Final features of this balance bike are an adjustable hand brake (great for older children), a carry handle, a bell and safety handlebars to help protect small hands in the event of a fall.

The Scoot XL balance bike makes a great choice for a quality balance bike, especially for children aged between 4 -7.

Balance bike footrests

Does your balance bike need to have a footrest? You will probably find that most balance bikes out there these days don’t have a footrest, and it is not really an essential feature to consider when you are looking for the best balance bike.

However, footrests on balance bikes can be useful, especially if the rider is coasting along or going down a long hill. It gives them somewhere to tuck their feet out of the way and stops them getting tangled up in the rest of the bike! If your child is using the footrest for a reasonable period of time, then they must be well on their well to learning to balance!

Strider 12 Classic Balance Bike

One important factor to consider about balance bike footrests is that they are positioned correctly on the bike.

If the footrest is poorly designed, it can get in the way and cause the child to hit the back of their leg on it, causing more harm than good.

Some Strider bikes (pictured) feature a footrest, which is towards the back wheel of the bike. This is a great design as it doesn’t get in the way when the rider is walking or running with their bike to push it along.

Other bikes feature a low platform, and you will find this on models such as the Puky LRM Learner Bike and the Bike Star Classic. The low platform or footboard often comes combined with a step through frame – so this feature makes the bikes easy to mount and the footboard gives the rider somewhere to rest their feet as they scoot along.

These bikes are particularly good options for younger riders and we have recommended them in our feature on best balance bikes for 2 year olds.

Going back to footrests, although they can be useful we think there are more important things to consider when you are choosing the best balance bike for you. The make, model, type of tyres, frame composition (wooden, steel or aluminium), saddle height and many other factors are probably all much more important!

Motorbike balance bike

As an Amazon associate I may earn a small fee from qualifying purchases at no extra cost to you. This helps us to run the site. Thank you for your support!

A motorbike balance bike is something completely different from traditional balance bikes, as while a normal balance bike will resemble a pedal bike – a motorbike balance bike will offer an exciting motorbike style along with racing designs so they are perfect for young motorsport enthusiasts!

Several different manufacturers offer balance bikes in a motorbike style, and we have come up with some of our preferred models below:

Yammy Wooden Motorbike Balance Bike

Yammy Wooden Motorbike balance bike
  • Racing Motorbike style
  • Birch plywood frame
  • 3 different saddle heights

The Yammy Wooden Motorbike balance bike is made by Kidzmotion, who also offer the Jiggy Wooden Balance bike and the Oowee Pink Balance Bike.

This bike will really catch the eye with a blue and white colour scheme including the frame, tyres and handlebars. It comes with a birch plywood frame, a soft padded seat and a saddle that is adjustable to 3 different heights between 38cm and 42cm.

Check out our guide to balance bike seat heights here. Just watch out for the handlebars as you are not able to adjust the height of these!

An extra feature that we really love are the stickers which are available as a 2, 3, 4 or 5 so they can be personalised with your child’s age.

This bike will probably be a bit too big for an average 2 year old with a 38cm saddle height, and it is also quite heavy. However, it will suit older children who are getting into racing perfectly.

There are several alternatives to the Yammy Wooden Motorbike which are also offered by Kidzmotion. They offer the same style and features of the Yammy bike, but in different colours. The Hondee bike is available in striking orange, the Kwaka bike in green and the Duke bike in red.

  • Great motorbike balance bike for younger children

Another bike to consider is the Molto Premium Motorbike.

Young riders will love this bike which has all terrain wheels and a bright red, motorcycle design.

The Molto Premium Motorbike has a saddle height of 32cm, so it would be suitable for 2 or 3 year olds (although make sure you check their inseam first). The sturdy build and wider wheels also make it much easier to initially balance and propel than a traditional balance bike.

This bike doesn’t require any assembly so it is ready straight out of the box.

Another option from Molto is the Molto “Cross Superman” Motorcycle. As the name suggests, this motorbike balance bike has a fantastic Superman design so it is ideal for children that love superheroes!

Kids Bike Gloves

A pair of good quality and stylish kids bike gloves is an essential accessory when you are buying some extras for your balance bike!

Kids bike gloves perform several functions, as they will not only help to protect the hands in the event of a fall or scrape against walls, trees or other such hazards, they can also help to provide extra grip on the handlebars as well as keeping the hands warm.

As there is such a huge range of kids bike gloves available, it would be impossible to review them all so we have selected our top 3 choices to help you choose:

Best Bike Gloves for 2 Year Olds

Kiddimoto Kids Bike Gloves

Kiddimto Bike Gloves Flames
  • Great range of funky designs
  • Fingerless style allows greater dexterity
  • Especially designed for younger riders aged 2-5
  • Padded palms for protection

Kiddimoto offer a fantastic range of really good looking kids bike gloves, available in a number of different styles which complement their range of funky balance bikes.

These include styles such as Pastel Dotty, Neon Yellow and Stars – and we really like the colourful Flames gloves (pictured)

The gloves feature padded palms for extra protection, Velcro straps to keep them secure on tiny hands and a fingerless style which allows the rider greater dexterity.

These are possibly the best kids bike gloves available for younger balance bike riders, as they are suitable for children from the age of 2. There are two different sizes available with the smaller size suitable for the younger age group.

This is in contrast to many of the bike gloves available from other bike manufacturers, which are mainly catering for older children with the smaller sizes fitting children from age 4 or 5.

Kiddimto Bike Gloves are great value and are usually available for less than £10!

Bike Gloves for 4-6 Year Olds

Vbiger Kids Bike Gloves

Vbiger Kids bike gloves
  • Fleece lining for warmth
  • Lightweight gloves give range of movement
  • Anti-slip printing for extra grip
  • Touchscreen facility
  • Great gloves for 4 years plus

As mentioned above, the smaller sizes of many bike manufacturers are suitable for children in the higher end of the balance bike range.

These gloves from Vbiger are an excellent choice, as they are made from soft lycra with a smooth fleece lining to keep the hands warm. They also have an anti-slip silicone printing on the palm and fingertips to provide extra grip.

These kids bike gloves are lightweight so they provide great freedom of movement, and they also have a touchscreen function on the thumb and index finger so they can be used with smartphones and tablets!

It is useful to know that these gloves are not very thick, so although they are ideal for the cooler autumn months they will not provide full protection in the depths of winter.

However, they are a really good choice for 4-6 year olds and are available for around £8.99.

Leopards Kids Motocross Bike Gloves

Leopard Motocross Kids Bike Gloves
  • Bright and striking colours
  • An ideal complement to a sporty or BMX balance bike
  • Breathable mesh material
  • Suitable for children aged 4 plus

Several balance bikes have a BMX, sporty or motorbike style, and if you are looking for some bike gloves to match then these gloves from Leopard are ideal!

They are available in a range of bright colours including red, blue, black, yellow and green – and they are made from a breathable mesh construction with reinforced thumb and palm.

The Velcro strap provides a secure fit, and they offer great protection against falls and scrapes.

The small size of the Leopard Motocross bike gloves are suitable for 4-6 year olds..

This is a just a small selection of the kids bike gloves available, as there are also excellent gloves produced by companies such as Polaris and Wulfsport.

Most gloves are available for between £5 and £15, so it is a just a small investment to enjoy all of the benefits that kids bike gloves provide.
