Boppi Metal Balance Bike

Strider Classic Balance Bike

Here is our review of the Tiny Balance Bike for when it is available to purchase again:

  • Wide rubber wheels
  • Steel frame
  • Can be used indoors and outdoors

The Tiny Bike Balance Bike is a great little balance bike that looks great and has a robust build.

The bike is aimed at children aged 2-4 years, but it lives up to its name as one of the smaller bikes in the market so would make an ideal present for a child’s 2nd birthday.

It would also be suitable or some children aged under 2 if they are big for their age and you are keen for them to get on their bike. It makes a great starter bike to help children steer and balance before they graduate to a ‘proper’ pedal bike. It weighs in at a lightweight 3.2kg.

Easy to assemble straight out of the box, the Tiny Bike Balance Bike is sturdy and stylish and features a steel frame that is available in a range of colours, including pink, purple, red and white.

Other features include a footrest that is ideal for children as they glide along, an adjustable seat and safety handlebars. Check out our guide to balance bike saddle heights for advice on how to choose a bike that is the correct size for your child. The tyres are solid, which means there is no risk of punctures but the ride may not be as comfortable a bike with air tyres.

The Tiny Bike Balance Bike is fantastic value for money and competes directly with bikes such as Chillafish and Bike Star which are a similar price.

We think this is a great choice for a starter bike as it can be ridden indoors and outdoors, so if you do decide to purchase the Tiny Bike Balance Bike then your child should be off and about in no time at all.

Oowee Pink Balance Bike

Oowee Pink Balance Bike
  • Wooden balance bike with floral design
  • 3 different saddle heights from 38cm
  • Too big for 2 year old – best for 3 or 4 year old
  • Air tyres give a comfortable ride

The Oowee Pink Balance bike is another funky and fun bike from Kidzmotion, who also manufacture the Jiggy Wooden Balance Bike, which we featured recently on this website.

The Oowee Pink Balance bike is definitely one for the girls in the family, with the wheels and saddle a striking pink, which complements the flower petal design on the frame. This is one of our favourite pink balance bikes!

Manufactured from birch plywood, the wooden frame is environmentally friendly and the bike is easy to manoeuvre which is one of the main advantages of wooden balance bikes.

Other features include safety handlebars which have a soft grip on either end, a soft padded seat and a saddle height which can be adjusted between three heights of 38cm, 40cm and 42cm.

This means that the bike will probably be too big if you are looking for a bike for a 2 year old, as these bikes will start with saddle heights starting at 28cm or 29cm. Check out our guide to balance bike saddle heights and our recommendations for the best balance bike for 2 year olds.

This is a fun bike that your kids are sure to love, and the Oowee Pink Balance bike also features a carry handle and air tyres. This gives the advantage of a more comfortable ride with plenty of ‘give’ as the rider goes over bumps and up and down kerbs. Read our guide to balance bike tyres.

The bike does require some assembly this is really straightforward so your child should soon be off and on their bike.

Although it does not boast some of the features of the more expensive bikes available – the Oowee Pink Balance bike is a great way to learn to ride and is ideal for outings to the park this year!

However, the most popular age for children to start riding balance bikes is between the ages of 2 and 3, so we thought it would be useful to provide a guide to the best balance bike for 2 year olds.

If your child is between the age of 2 and 3 then this is the perfect time to start learning to ride with a balance bike. A normal pedal bike will be too heavy and cumbersome to use at this age – and balance bikes are a lot more fun than traditional tricycles or bikes with stabilisers.

One of the main advantages of balance bikes is that they are very light, which makes them easy to manoeuvre for younger children. This also makes them very safe, and easy to clean and transport.

If your child is just about to turn 2, then a balance bike is the perfect present for their 2nd birthday! A child that gets to grips with balance and steering between the ages of 2 and 3 is likely to be able to progress to a normal pedal bike by the age of 4.

As this is such a great age for learning to ride using a balance bike, then there is a huge choice of bikes available for this age range. We have highlighted some of the most popular in the table above, but some of the main features to look out for are:

Features of Balance Bikes for 2 year olds

Seat Height

All balance bikes will come with an adjustable seat so that they can grow with your child. However, it is important to make sure that you measure the inside leg of your child and buy a bike that has the correct seat height for them. We have some more details in our Balance Bike Seat Guide.

If you are buying a bike for a 2 year old, then you are going to want to purchase a bike with one of the lower saddles, and seat heights tend to start at around 29cm. You need to make sure that the lowest seat height is around 2.5 -3cm lower than the inside leg so that the child can get on and off the bike comfortably.

This is why we recommend the Puky LRM Learner Bike, the Banana Balance Bike and the Ridestar balance bike for 2 year olds. These bikes all have adjustable saddles with seat heights starting at just 29cm or 32cm, so these are perfect for this age group.

In general, we find that metal balance bikes have more adjustable saddles than wooden balance bikes, so although wooden balance bikes can be painted in lots of fun and exciting colours a metal bike might fit your child better.

Some of the balance bikes for younger children also have a special learner bike saddle.

Step through frames

Some of the most popular balance bikes for 2 year olds have a step through frame with a low platform. This allows the child to build their confidence by resting their feet on the platform as they scoot along.

It also makes it easier for them to get on and off the bike, and an excellent example of this is the Puky LRM Learner Bike.

Another great option is the Banana Bike range, as the signature curved frame on these bikes allow easy access.

Frame Composition

As already mentioned, the majority of the best balance bikes for 2 year olds are made from metal. However, if you would prefer a wooden balance bike there are some great choices such as the Jiggy Wooden Balance Bike.

This has a great retro design and is very reasonably priced, and another great alternative is a Tidlo Balance bike which is manufactured by John Crane. These lovely balance bikes are painted in some beautiful colours and wooden balance bikes also have the advantage of being great for the environment.

Tyres

Check out our Balance Bike Tyres Guide for more details on balance bike tyres, but you will find that the choice comes down to traditional pneumatic (air) tyres or EVA foam tyres. Pneumatic tyres have the advantage of providing more ‘give’ so a more comfortable ride, but foam tyres have the benefit of being puncture proof and they are also perfect for younger children learning to ride on smooth surfaces.

Strider offer foam tyres on the Strider 12 Sport – although they do offer the option of air tyres on some of their models. The Strider 12 classic also has the advantage of weighing just 3kg which means it is probably the lightest bike on the market!

Other features

Balance bikes for 2 year old's should also have safety handlebars grips, which are rubber grips with a knobby end to protect little hands and fingers if they run into something – they will also come into play in the event of a fall.

Some balance bikes are equipped with brakes, but we really don't feel this is an important feature for 2 year olds. They have enough to concentrate on with balance and steering, and will be able to slow down and stop with their feet. You might have to be prepared to get through a bit of extra shoe leather while they are learning to ride! Brakes can be useful on balance bikes for older age groups, but this is not nearly as important as choosing a lightweight bike with the correct saddle height.

Best Balance Bike for 2 year olds - Reviews

Strider Sport Balance Bike

  • Lightweight and sporty balance bike
  • Saddle height from just 28cm all the way to 48cm
  • Footrest helps child to learn balance
  • EVA polymer tyres are puncture proof

The Strider Sport balance bike is a fantastic balance bike, not just for 2 year olds but for any child learning to ride.

Strider are renowned for producing quality balance bikes, and the Strider Sport model has plenty of features that make it an excellent  choice.

Firstly, it has a stylish and sporty design, and it is very lightweight at just 2.9kg which makes it one of the lightest balance bikes on the market.

It also has a very low starter saddle height at just 28cm, which makes it suitable for very young children and this can be extended all the way to 48cm with the help of a seatpost extension. However it is likely your child will have mastered balance before they need this if they start riding at age 2.

The Strider Sport also has a footrest which is handy when the child is gliding, and although it is more expensive than some of the other balance bikes available it is a great choice as a first bike for your child.

Banana Balance Bike LT

  • Saddle height from 31cm - 40cm
  • Lightweight at just 2.9kg
  • Signature curved frame

The Banana balance bike LT model is one of our very favourite balance bikes for 2 year olds, and for several reasons.

The first, and most important reason is that the saddle is fully adjustable between 31cm and 40cm. There are no tools required, so it is a simple 2 minute job to raise the saddle when your 2 year old goes on a growth spurt.

This bike is also lightweight and easy to handle, with the signature curved banana frame providing great looks and easy access.

It should also be easy for your child to pick up steering, as the wide handlebars have been designed for riders using a bike for the first time. The handlebars also have the essential rubber grips for protection during a fall.

An excellent balance bike for 2 year olds and great value as well!

Ridestar Balance Bike

  • Classic BMX design
  • Lightweight frame
  • Puncture proof tyres
  • Saddle height 32cm - 40cm

The Ridestar balance bike is another great choice for 2 year olds, offering a classic BMX design and all the essential features required to learn to ride.

The saddle height starts at 32cm, so this is ever so slightly higher than the Banana balance bike. However, this bike should still be a good fit for most children of this age.

The lightweight frame should be easy to handle, and the EVA foam tyres remove any worries about punctures.

Another great value bike for 2 year olds.

Puky LRM Balance Bike

  • Step through frame
  • Saddle height from 29cm
  • Safety handlebars
  • High quality bike

The Puky LRM balance bike is more expensive than most of the other bikes in our selection. However, we have included it as part of our recommendations as it offers a very low saddle height of just 29cm and a step through frame.

These features make the bike ideal for 2 year olds, and the low platform will allow the children to rest their feet as they scoot along. This is very handy when they get up speed having got used to the bike!

Puky is a brand that produces high quality bikes, so this really is a great choice for a starter bike for young children.

Chicco Red Bullet Balance Bike

  • Very light at 2.7kg
  • Saddle height from 33cm
  • Shorter wheel base than some other bikes

Another popular balance bike for 2 year olds is the Chicco Red Bullet balance bike.

This is smaller than some of the other bikes we have featured, which makes it very lightweight and the frame weighs just 2.7kg.

Although this is great for young children, some riders have found that the shorter wheel base on this bike can make it a little bit more difficult to handle.

The saddle height is from 33cm, so although this is slightly higher than our other recommendations, it should still be a good fit for most children this age.

A great option and one of the least expensive balance bikes available for 2 year olds as it is generally available for under £30.

Boppi BMX Balance Bike

  • BMX style bike
  • Saddle height from 30cm
  • Puncture proof tyres
  • Lightweight frame

The Boppi BMX metal balance bike is another great option for 2 year olds.

The saddle height starts at just 30cm, so this makes the bike ideal for this age group and it can easily be adjusted as your child grows.

This bike also offers a lightweight frame, puncture proof tyres and safety handlebars.

Jiggy Wooden Balance Bike

  • Stylish retro design
  • Wooden frame
  • Saddle height from 34cm

The Jiggy Wooden balance bike is the only bike on our list with a wooden frame.

This is not because we dislike wooden balance bikes, we think that they are great fun with brightly coloured frames.

However, most wooden balance bikes don’t have the same seat height range as metal bikes, and the Jiggy Wooden balance bike offers three choices between 34cm and 38cm.

This means it should be suitable for some 2 year olds, but do make sure you measure your child’s inseam before purchasing the bike. Check out our balance bike saddle height guide for full details.

This bike has a retro style with a fantastic design, and is our recommended option if you would prefer a wooden balance bike for your child.

Summary

There is so much choice for children age between 2 and 3 that there are plenty of excellent bikes even if they are not mentioned in the table above.

Your child is likely to be extremely excited at the prospect of riding a ‘real’ bike, and their first balance bike is likely to provide hours of fun and set them well on the way to riding a proper pedal bike.

Balance bike Turning Limiters

Balance bike turning limiters are another factor to consider when you are looking for the best balance bike, so are they really necessary?

The main function of a turning limiter is to restrict the angle that the front wheel and handlebars can turn and prevent them from performing a full revolution.

If a turning limiter is fitted to your bike, then the child will probably not be able to turn much beyond 30 degrees in each direction. This provides a safety aspect to the bike, as it prevents the handlebars being turned fully to the right or left by an inexperienced rider, which would probably result in the rider taking a tumble over the handlebars.

Turning limiters are supposed to minimise injuries if a fall does occur and they prevent the brake cables becoming twisted (if your balance bike has brakes – don’t miss our guide to balance bike brakes).

However, the main purpose of your child learning to ride on a balance bike is to get them ready for a proper pedal bike once they have mastered steering and balance. If the bike is fitted with a turning limiter, then they are not going to be used to the full steering range when they grow out of their balance bike.

Some balance bike experts have also claimed that the presence of a turning limiter will prevent the handlebars from lying flat to the ground in the event of a fall – which could make injuries more likely.

So although some bikes do come equipped with a turning limiter, this can restrict the child’s ability to steer and there are probably more important factors to consider when you are deciding upon the best balance bike.

These include the frame component (wooden or metal), tyres, colour and of course the price. Good luck in choosing the best balance bike!

Jiggy Wooden Balance Bike
  • Stylish Retro Design
  • Wooden Frame
  • Lightweight
  • Soft Plastic Handlebars
  • Saddle height from 34cm
  • Great value

There are several manufacturers that produce quality wooden balance bikes, and another option is the Jiggy Wooden Balance Bike.

The bike is manufactured by Kidzmotion, who are a small and family run business that offer a range of balance bikes and other products. This is also the sister bike to the Oowee Pink Balance Bike.

As you can see from the image, the Jiggy Wooden Balance Bike scores well on appearance, with a retro style that offers a red, white and blue design than runs throughout the bike including the frame, the tyres and the handlebars.

The frame is made from birch plywood, so this means that it is lightweight at 4kg and good for the environment. The soft padded seat provides a comfortable ride and can be adjusted to three heights from 34cm, 36cm and 38cm.

This means that the Jiggy Wooden Balance Bike would suit children from 2 years old and upwards – but make sure you read our balance bike seat guide and measure the child’s inseam first!

Other features include soft plastic handlebars with safety ends, and a carry handle so the bike is easy to transport when the rider has had enough and just wants to walk. We also think the wheels look great with a blue circular infill and inflatable tyres – just like a proper bike. Check out the other sorts of tyres that are used on balance bikes in our balance bike tyres guide.

This is a stylish and sleek wooden balance bike that will look great in the playground, on the street or at the local park.

The design means that it will suit both boys and girls – so it is ideal if you have younger brothers and sisters waiting in line that the bike can be passed on to.

The Jiggy Wooden Balance bike's nearest competitor is the wooden Boppi balance bike. This bike is a similar price and are available in a number of different designs.

Good luck in searching for the best balance bike!

Go Glider Balance Bike

Go Glider balance bike

The Go Glider balance bike is currently unavailable.

Here are some recommended alternatives:

We will let you know when it is back in stock!

Here is our review of the Go-Glider Balance Bike for when it is available again:

Balance bikes are not just for younger children, and we have already examined the best balance bikes for 6 year olds elsewhere on this website. Although most children of this age are ready for a pedal bike, some children like to continue with balance bikes while others are later learners.

One of the best balance bikes for older children is the Go Glider balance bike, which is suitable for children from 5 to 10 years old.

The bike is manufactured by the Glide Bike Company, and is equipped with 16 inch wheels, which makes it a comfortable ride for older children.

The Go Glider Balance bike looks great and closely resembles a quality pedal bike, and the low centre of gravity on the bike means that children should soon be able to take their feet off the floor to begin ‘gliding’.

The Go Glider Balance bike does require some assembling, although this should not take more than about 30 minutes before you are ready for a ride.

Features include a kickstand, a rear drum brake and a footrest – which can be great for the rider to stand on and perform tricks. The tyres are maintenance free EVA foam tyres.

This bike is usually in available in several colours including blue, red, pink, green and orange. Although this bike is generally more expensive than most balance bikes designed for younger children, riders of the Go Glider Balance Bike should not outgrow their bike as quickly, especially with the adjustable handlebars and padded seat.

Many children like to continue riding balance bikes well beyond when they can ride a pedal bike – just because balance bikes are so much fun and easy to handle! The Go Glider Balance bike definitely fits into this category, and riders should be able to build up plenty of speed and a great repertoire of tricks once they have mastered the initial skills of balancing and steering.

Stompee Balance Bike

Stompee Balance Bike Review

  • Excellent price
  • Cool mountain bike appearace
  • Pneumatic tyres
  • Min saddle height 35cm

The Stompee Balance bike is a great choice if your child is a budding mountain biker, produced by Stomp who are a leading pit bike manufacturer.

The Stompee Balance Bike is very popular as it has the appearance of a genuine mini mountain bike, helped by the chunky pneumatic tyres and quality build. The pneumatic tyres help to provide a comfortable ride, and kids will love the style of this bike as Stomp specialise in cool off road motorbikes.

Other features of the Stompee Balance Bike include a steel tube frame, alloy rims and a large padded seat that is adjustable from 35cm – 45cm. The light weight frame means that the Stompee weighs in a 4.2kg, and the padded seat is really comfy! It is available in several colours including black, bright blue, bright red and hot pink.

This is the only balance bike in the Stomp range, and is suitable for children from 2 years through to 5 or 6, by which time they will more than likely  have outgrown their Stompee and be ready to move on to a larger pedal bike.

You might find that the bike is slightly too big and heavy for a 2 year old of average height, as some other balance bikes such as a Puky balance bike have a saddle height starting at 29cm, so these may be more suitable for younger children. We have a full guide to the best balance bikes for 2 years olds here.

The Stompee Balance bike comes with plenty of features for a mid range priced bike, and these include a high performance V-brake. This is applied to the left handlebar and is attached to the rear wheel so this will help your child get used to the principle of braking as they learn to steer and balance. It will also help to save on their shoes if they learn to use it properly! Check out our guide to balance bike brakes here!

Overall, this is a great all round balance bike that looks cool and provides fantastic value. However there are some very good alternative BMX balance bikes available such as a Bike Star balance bike, a Chillafish balance bike or a Strider balance bike.

Happy cycling and don't forget your balance bike accessories such as the essential helmets and kids bike gloves.

Balance bike tyres

Balance Bike Tyre Guide

Another important feature to consider when you are looking for the best balance bike is the type of tyre that you would prefer. There are several types of tyres available on balance bikes, so we thought it would be useful to prepare the Ultimate Balance Bike Tyre Guide!

Pneumatic (Air) Balance Bike Tyres

Pneumatic Air Tyre

The most popular type of tyre is the standard air, or pneumatic tyre, which is used by several of the leading balance bike manufacturers such as Puky. The main advantage of the pneumatic tyres is that the flexing of the tyre generally provides more traction, cushioning and a much more comfortable ride, just as it does on bikes for older children or adults.

The pneumatic tyres also make balance bikes appear more like standard bikes, and they come with a number of different tread patterns. They will also last longer than plastic or foam tyres.

There are a few 'cons' or disadvantages to pneumatic or air tyres, and the main con is that they can be prone to flat tyres, just like standard bikes. You can reduce the risk of this by adding some tyre sealant, but it can be a hassle if your child runs over a sharp object and you need to organise a replacement tube.

Pneumatic tyres can also make balance bikes heavier than those with foam or plastic tyres, so balance bikes with pneumatic tyres are generally recommended for children aged 3 or older . You may want to start off with a smaller bike with foam tyres and progress to air tyres.

EVA Foam Balance Bike Tyres

Another popular balance bike tyre type is EVA Foam tyres, where the inside of the tyre is filled with a hard, rubber foam. These tyres are preferred by manufacturers such as Strider, who use foam tyres as standard on most of their bikes. EVA foam tyres are lighter than pneumatic tyres, and the main advantage is that the solid foam means there is no risk of punctures and the tyres maintain their shape.

In contrast to the pneumatic tyres, the EVA Foam tyres do not provide much 'give' and flexibility, so this can result in a bumpier ride and the rider has to absorb much more of the impact when riding on bumpy surfaces or going up and down kerbs etc.

EVA Foam tyres are perfect for younger children learning to ride on smooth, paved surfaces and they also require less maintenance. Simply wipe the mud and grass off the tyre and you are ready to go. Strider offer EVA Foam tyres as standard on their bikes, but they do offer an air tyre as an optional extra on some models.

'Fat Boy' Balance bike tyres

Fat Boy' tyres are preferred by some manufacturers such as Early Rider, who feature them on several of their models. These tyres are larger than the standard pneumatic air tyres, and as the name suggests are fatter and wider.

The larger tyre means the extra air provides more flexibility and cushioning, enhancing the comfort of the ride while providing all of the traction benefits of the pneumatic tyres. These tyres are generally found on more expensive and top end models.

These are the main types of balance bike tyres on the market used by most of the bikes that we have featured on this website. A few manufacturers have started to use rubber honeycomb tyres, which combine the best of both air and foam tyres as they provide the comfort and flexibility of air tyres but are puncture proof. These tyres may become more common in the future. Hard plastic tyres are also sometimes used, but these are only really useful for indoor bikes and toys.

We hope you found our Ultimate Guide to Balance Bike Tyres useful, and good luck in finding the best balance bike for your child.

Balance bike saddle height guide

We have already seen from all of the models that we have reviewed on this website that there is a huge range of balance bikes that vary in style, tyre size, frame structure and many other variables.

However, probably the most important factor to consider when you are choosing the best balance bike is the saddle height.

If you get this wrong, then your child is going to have problems getting on and off their bike and won’t be comfortable during their ride. This might mean they become reluctant to use the bike and they miss out on the freedom and excitement that a balance bike can bring!

How to choose the correct saddle height

The first thing you will need to do is to accurately obtain the inside leg measurement of the child for whom you are buying the bike. You can do this by standing the child with their feet flat on the floor (with no shoes). Then place an object (such as a book or magazine) between their legs as high as comfortable, and when they step away measure how high this is from the ground.

You will then need to compare this measurement with the minimum saddle height of the balance bikes that you are looking at.

The critical thing to consider is that when you are comparing the inside leg measurement of your child with the balance bike, make sure that the minimum saddle height is around 2.5cm – 3cm less than their inside leg.

This sentence is in bold because it is probably the most important thing we have written this entire website!

If you get this measurement correct, the child will be able to get on to the bike easily and they should be able to get their feet flat on the floor. This will allow them to propel the bike along and use their feet to stop when necessary.

The table also provides links to our full guides for choosing balance bikes for each age group. Although the saddle height is crucially important, there are plenty of other factors to consider!

It is also worth noting that every child is different, so different bikes will suit different children. However, the relationship between the inside leg measurement and the minimum saddle height should never change!

Adjustable saddles

Almost all balance bikes come with an adjustable seat, and they will advertise the range of heights available.

We have made an effort to highlight the saddle height ranges on our reviews of each model, and the lowest saddle height provides a good indication of the most suitable age range for the bike.

You will find that metal balance bikes have a larger range of heights than wooden balance bikes, and some bikes such as the Strider Classic have a large range of heights between 29cm and 40cm.

This means that a good quality bike with a large range of heights can grow with your child, and once they have mastered the concept of balance and steering it should see them all the way through to a ‘proper’ pedal bike. The Strider Classic also offers adjustable handlebars and an extendable seat post.

We hope you found this guide to balance bike saddle heights useful and good luck in choosing the best balance bike for your child!
